Murray River Adventures, Cohuna Victoria
THE GUNBOWER CREEK

Gunbower Creek is an idyllic anabranch of the Murray River between Torrumbarry and Koondrook. It sustains life in these sprawling wetlands and the farmland beyond.

The creek is a breeding ground for native fish species such as Murray Cod, Golden Perch and is home to Platypus, several species of Turtle and the Rakali (Australian Water Rat), .

It forms the western boundary of magnificent Gunbower Island with the Murray River bordering the eastern boundary.

The Gunbower Creek is an important natural carrier in the irrigation supply system. It holds water permanently and has very high environmental value, particularly for native fish and water birds.

Its high water levels and gentle banks make it very attractive for camping with great access to the water for fishing or canoeing.

THE GUNBOWER ISLAND & FOREST

Gunbower Forest is an internationally significant site under the Ramsar Convention (an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands) and forms part of the ‘Living Murray’ Gunbower-Koondrook-Perricoota icon site.

Covering 19,450ha, Gunbower Forest is bounded by the Murray River to the north and Gunbower Creek to the south.

Before European settlement, Gunbower Island was frequented by two indigenous clans –  The Barapa Barapa and Yorta Yorta people have long connections with the area now known as Gunbower National Park.  The area was known as Kanbowro – twisting and tortuous like the necks of the Black Swans.
